US President Donald Trump is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the ASEAN summit, slated to be held in Manila on November 13-14. Trump would also be visiting Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam, and Philippines to attend regional summits and discuss trade and the North Korean nuclear threat. A visit to India is not included in the itinerary.

Though India is yet to make an announcement in this regard, sources said Modi was expected to attend the regional summit and discuss thorny issues, including Pakistan, with the American President.

If the two meet, it will be their third meeting after the delegation-level talks in Washington DC in June and an interaction during the G-20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, in July, this year.

Several Asian leaders were reported to have persuaded Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to attend the summit.

This is in view of the impending North Korean crisis. Trump's Manila visit was in doubt following Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's anti-American outburst but the White House finally confirmed his presence on Friday night.

"The President will participate in a series of bilateral, multilateral, and cultural engagements, including the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit, demonstrating his continued commitment to the alliances and partnerships of the US in the region," the White House said in a statement.

"President Trump will discuss the importance of a free and open Indo-Pacific region to America's prosperity and security. He will also emphasise the importance of fair and reciprocal economic ties with America's trade partners. The President's engagements will strengthen the international resolve to confront the North Korean threat and ensure complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula," the statement added.
