Truck mows into crowd of protesters outside police station in Chittoor, 20 killed

Several people were seriously injured and some were feared dead as a truck ran into a crowd outside Yerpedu police station in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh this afternoon.

At least 20 people, including 2 policemen were killed and several others were seriously injured when a truck ran into a crowd outside Yerpedu police station in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh on Friday afternoon.

The victims were waiting outside the police station at Yerpedu to stage a dharna to demand action against illegal sand mining in the area when the driver of a passing truck lost control and ran over them.

Police from Chittoor said as per the preliminary information, the truck was carrying heavy load of crushed stones and travelling at high speed, hence lost control and ran over at least 20 persons.

The truck was headed from Hyderabad to Chennai.

Deputy Chief Minister N China Rajappa expressed shock over the incident and said six people were crushed under the wheels of the truck, while the remaining 14 died of electric shock with high tension wires falling on them and fire in the shops.

He spoke to the Tirupati Superintendent of Police and directed that the injured be extended necessary medical treatment, an official said here.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the truck driver, who is now absconding, was drunk.
