Eight days after a nationwide strike, the truckers across the country have called off the strike.

On Friday evening, several unions and association called off the strike after a detailed meeting with Ministry of Road Transport. The All India Motor Transport Congress called off its nationwide strike after the government assured that their issues will be addressed.

Around 9 million trucks had gone off the roads because of the indefinite strike called by the All India Motor Transport Congress on July 20. The union represents more than 9.3 million truckers and about 5 million bus, tourist taxi and maxi cab operators. There are 60000 trucks that enter and exit Mumbai everyday.

The government has promised transporters that third-party insurance for heavy vehicles will be reviewed and a mechanism will be put in place to ensure technology-led movement of commercial vehicles across the toll plaza, the transporters' association and road ministry said in a joint statement.

"The government has agreed to reduce third-party insurance premium to 15% from 26-27%," All India Motor Transport Congress Chairman KS Aitwal said.

The government will also look into the feasibility of extending the coverage of Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana to drivers and co-workers of commercial vehicles.

The government has also promised to notify National Permit Scheme for tourist vehicles and will consider other demands including regularisation of higher payload for existing vehicles, among others.

A committee will also be formed under the chairmanship of the road secretary to look into transporters' demands related to goods and services tax, delivery at ports and e-way bills, among others.

The committee will also have representatives from the shipping ministry, Central Board of Direct Taxes, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs and All India Motor Transport Congress. The panel is expected to submit its recommendations to the government within a period of three months.
