Trouble seems to be brewing between the Delhi University and the Ministry of Human Resource Development, sources in the university told DNA.

According to sources, the Vice Chancellor of the university Yogesh Tyagi recently met with senior officials in the HRD Ministry and expressed difficulties in carrying out his duty as the head of the university. Rumours were rife about Tyagi wanting to resign from his position as well. However, this newspaper could not confirm the authenticity of the information.

The reason being cited for this trouble is the way the ministry wants the VC to function. A professor close to the VC said: “In our last meeting with the VC, he told us that he wants to run the university according to the ordinances and statutes but is facing difficulty in doing so. He clearly hinted that he is facing difficulties from the government in functioning, be it in hiring of faculty members or other functions of the university, like appointing college principals.”

There are around 20 colleges in the university that are currently running without a permanent Principal. “The ministry wants their own people to be appointed as the principals in colleges but that is not happening. Any meeting with the ministry officials is like a diktat and any university VC who does not want to follow the diktat is shown the door,” the source added.

Sources in Tyagi’s office said that it has been a long time coming since any official file related to crucial academic matters in the university had been moved.

A few days ago, Tyagi also had a tiff with a senior HRD ministry official in a meeting.

After Tyagi took over as the Vice Chancellor, he was seen as being close to the BJP government. However, the current developments cast a doubt over this theory.  Attempts to inquire the information from the VC went futile.
