The Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel have been deployed on election duty in the Cooch Behar district of West Bengal where elections would be held on Thursday, sources in the state police said today.

TSR personnel from the 5th, 9th and 12th battalion had been deployed during the April 9 Lok Sabha elections in Nagaland from where they were dispatched to West Bengal at the instructions of the Union Home Ministry, they said.

A few TSR battalions work as India Reserve Battalions which are deployed elsewhere in the country, the sources said.

These troopers were earlier sent to Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Nagaland and Mizoram to provide security during various elections in these states.

The TSR was raised in 1984 to counter insurgency in the state.
