The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) on Saturday decided to withdraw from the election in Tripura's Charilam constituency amid the ongoing violence allegedly by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"Left Front withdraws candidate from Charilam constituency where the election was scheduled to take place on March 12 in protest against ongoing post-poll violence," CPIM Spokesperson, Gautam Das informed.
The polling in 19-Charilam (ST) Assembly seat was deferred to March 12, following the death of CPI (M) candidate Ramendra Narayan Debbarma due to cardiac arrest while campaigning on February 11.
The election was deferred because of the demise of the CPI (M) candidate Ramendra Narayan Debbarma.
Jishnu Debbarman, who is now the deputy chief minister of the state, was the BJP candidate.
The BJP-IPFT combine scripted history this month by winning the Tripura assembly polls with a two-thirds majority and ending 25 years rule of the CPM-led Left Front in the state. The BJP and IPFT together bagged 43 seats. The elections in 59 seats in the 60-member assembly were held on 18 February. Polling was countermanded in one seat due to the death of a CPM candidate.
Biplab Kumar Deb on Friday took oath as the chief minister of the first BJP government in Tripura. Governor Tathagata Roy administered the oath of office and secrecy to Deb at a function at the sprawling Assam Rifles ground which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah.
