The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday questioned the timing of Congress President Rahul Gandhi's visit to Italy saying he "escaped to avoid the stress of election results."

"He is not a natural leader. He is a leader of circumstances. A leader does not leave his people in such times. He is a non-serious president of the Congress party," Union Minister Giriraj Singh said.

His comments came as the Congress was virtually wiped out from Tripura and Nagaland and was facing a tough battle to form government in Meghalaya in results of Assembly elections announced today.

"He vanished for 56 days once. He has vanished again. No leader can ditch his people un such times and would have stayed with them. He cannot handle stress. He knows when he has to leave, but the Congress people have made him the President," Singh said.

In the Assembly elections of Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland announced today, the BJP has emerged as the biggest gainer. While it is set to dethrone the CPI(M) in Tripura, its alliance partners have gained a huge ground in other two states.

The election in 59 seats for the 60-member Tripura Assembly was held on February 18. Polling was countermanded in one seat due to the death of a CPI(M) candidate.

Polling in Meghalaya and Nagaland was held on February 27.
