The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday gave a notice to the Rajya Sabha to raise the issue of the alleged gang-rape of an elderly nun West Bengal's Nadia district. "Given notice in RS to raise unfortunate incident of the alleged rape of a 72 year old nun in Ranaghat. Such issues are beyond politics," tweeted TMC spokesperson Derek O' Brien.

The West Bengal police have announced a cash reward of Rs one lakh for anyone providing information on the alleged gang rape. The nun was allegedly gang-raped in Ranaghat area of West Bengal's Nadia district on Saturday when around a dozen suspected dacoits entered the Convent of Jesus and Mary.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) termed the incident as 'barbaric' and said the perpetrators of the crime will be brought down to book. The Delhi Catholic Archdiocese also strongly condemned the incident, saying it was shameful as the victim was a religious person who had consecrated her life to god.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has ordered a CID investigation into the matter.

Eight people have been detained in connection with the case after police officials released CCTV footage of the dacoits.
