Facing complaints from common public and even members of the Parliament, PMO has reportedly pulled up rail ministry over failing to ensure punctuality in train timings.

According to a report published in The Indian Express, PM Modi sought an explanation from Suresh Prabhu on why trains are increasingly running late. The report mentions that facing criticism, Prabhu is now taking daily stock of situation- which is a rare for a Rail Minister. Rail Ministry has formally denied receiving any letter from PMO. However MoS Rail Manoj Sinha confirmed to ANI that Modi did broach the topic during personal conversation.

Rail Ministry is currently on an overdrive to correct this lacunae. Old files from Emergency period are being looked into to see how trains used to run in time then. Punctuality of trains were over 90% during the brief stint of Emergency.

Many believe, the lowering punctuality figure may well be because of a new directive from Rail Minister. Earlier this month, Railway Board Member (Traffic) Ajay Shukla, in a letter to all zonal railways, warned traffic officers of strict actions for “wrong reporting” of train timings. Since then there has been a stark drop in the punctuality number. From 84% punctuality in March 2014, percentage has dipped to 79. In Central Zone, it is down by whooping 22%. It is left to be seen if Railway Ministry can finally get its act together.
