With the aim to spread traffic awareness among people, the police here held a unique exercise of distributing red roses to the violators on New Years day. Nearly 1500 motorists, including those not wearing seat belts and two-wheeler riders without helmets, were offered roses by the traffic cops here yesterday, a senior police official said on Friday.

"It was the first day of the new year and we thought of doing something different. The idea behind the exercise was to discipline traffic violators and to create awareness about road safety and inculcate the need to follow traffic rules," Kaputhala SSP Dhanpreet Kaur said.

Policemen offered roses to violators, who were taken by surprise, she said, adding, they have decided to rope in school children in future campaigns to assist in educating the public about traffic rules. The response from the public about yesterday's exercise has been "very good" and the gesture has been appreciated by citizens.
