Several tourists, locals and students on Sunday participated in the International Yoga Day celebrations at the beaches, open grounds and schools across Goa.

A state-level function would be held in the evening at Dr Shama Prasad Mukherjee stadium in Bambolim where Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar is expected to participate.

A special yoga session was also held at Raj Bhavan.

Addressing the crowd in Raj Bhavan, Goa Governor Mridula Sinha appealed to the students to make fruitful use of the gift of life and fill it with health, happiness and positives.

One should give time to his personal self and simple exercise of concentration such as yoga and healthy body and mind are essential for a person to make his life meaningful.

Sinha urged the students to take the message of importance of yoga to the society and inculcate in as many minds as possible. "We have derived yoga from the nature and we should keep this treasure for the posterity," she added.

In the morning, tourists, locals and life guard service personnel were seen performing yoga at Colva beach in South Goa.

Similar scenes were witnessed on the beaches of North Goa, including Calangute where sand virtually turned into a yoga mat.

Various schools also had yoga sessions for students, parents and teachers between 9 AM and 10 AM.

"We had not made yoga compulsory for the schools, but the response was good," state education director G Bhat said.

Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has already said that the schools can have the yoga sessions tomorrow as per their convenience.

Various schools affiliated to Archdiosean Board of Education had refused to conduct session today as students have to go for church masses.
