A top ministry of home affairs (MHA) official may be asked to go for allegedly trying to influence the CBI to go slow in the case of Matang Sinh who was arrested by the investigating agency on Saturday in connection with the multi-crore Saradha scam.

According to home ministry sources, the top home ministry official called up two top CBI officials before the arrest of Matang Sinh allegedly seeking to go slow in the probe.

The CBI, apparently, has also forwarded a complaint to the PMO to this effect, sources said.

Former Congress leader and union minister Matang Sinh was arrested by the CBI on Saturday on charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating and misappropriation of funds in the Saradha Realty case after a marathon grilling session of eight hours at the agency's Salt Lake office in Kolkata.

Matang Sinh had come under the scanner after he entered into a business deal with Sudipta Sen, arrested chairman of Saradha Group. In his purported April 2013 letter to the CBI, Sen had claimed that Matang took Rs 28 crore from the Saradha Group in various accounts as part of a deal to sell off 50 per cent shares of a TV channel owned by his now-estranged wife, Manoranjana. The letter also mentioned Rajesh Bajaj, a Guwahati businessman who negotiated with Matang.

Sources said union home minister Rajnath Singh is seized of the matter and the reports alleging top home ministry official's role in influencing the CBI probe and could seek an explanation from him soon. The PMO, source said, is in the know of the developments and is in touch with the union home minister.

The concerned top official, apparently, was close to Matang Sinh for a long time and also remained in touch with him all through his tenure in the home ministry.

Minister of state for home, Kiren Rijiju, however, said that the ministry will take action only if there is substantive allegation.

"If allegation is substantive then it is a serious matter but at the moment it is only hearsay. Let the concrete evidence come to us then we will take action. As of now there is only speculation, let something come to us in writing," Rijiju said.
