Kashmir unrest: Death toll touches 45, army chief reviews security

A 55-year-old man who was injured in Khumriyal area of Lolab valley in border district of Kupwara succumbed in the hospital. Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Mir was admitted in a serious condition four days ago in the SMHS hospital.

On a day army chief General Dalbir Singh reviewed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, another injured person succumbed taking the death toll in the violence to 45. 

A 55-year-old man who was injured in Khumriyal area of Lolab valley in border district of Kupwara succumbed in the hospital. Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Mir was admitted in a serious condition four days ago in the SMHS hospital.

“The deceased had received a blunt injury on his head. The police are trying to ascertain the cause of the injury,” said a police spokesman.

Police said the situation remained under control throughout the Kashmir valley, though some stray incidents of stone-pelting were reported.

“These incidents were reported from Nowpora in Sopore, Koundbal, Alesting in Ganderbal, Sangam in Anantnag, Kaloosa in Bandipora and Reck Chowk, Karan Nagar in Srinagar,” the spokesman added. 

Tension was palpable on the streets of Srinagar after separatists called for observing July 20 as `black day’ on the instance of Pakistan. Black flags were unfurled at number of places to mark the black day. Masked youth appeared in the old city and raised black flags and shouted pro freedom slogans. People also raised pro freedom slogans after the evening prayers. 

Curfew remained imposed in most parts of the valley to prevent any escalation in the protests and street violence for the 12th day on Wednesday. 

Chief of Army Staff General Dalbir Singh reviewed the security situation in Kashmir during his visit to the Srinagar based 15 Corps. 

The Army Chief was briefed by the Northern Army Commander Lt Gen DS Hooda and Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen Satish Dua on the situation along the Line of Control and the hinterland including the measures instituted to ensure close coordination with all security and other government agencies towards maintaining peace in the valley.

In his interaction with officers and troops, the Army Chief commended their operational preparedness and commitment to the cause of national security. He exhorted everyone to ensure strict vigil along the Line of Control. 

Appreciating the synergy being shown among all security agencies that has resulted in successful counter terrorist operations, he also complimented the troops on ground for showing maximum restraint even in the face of grave provocation. 

“He expressed his grief and concern over the casualties of civilians and security forces during the protests while making an earnest appeal to the Awaam (people) to maintain peace and help the security forces serve them better,” said Colonel SD Goswami, defence spokesman at Northern Command.

General Singh impressed upon everyone to continue their positive engagement with the people and lend them all possible assistance in close coordination with the other stakeholders. 

Meanwhile, the editors and owners of local dailies have decided to resume publication after meeting the chief minister Mehbooba Mufti.
