No sooner had Somen Mitra taken over as the West Bengal Congress president that there had been clashes reported between supporters of Mitra’s supporters with that of his predecessor, Adhir Chowdhury.
Sources said that to end to the infighting within the party, Mitra had, himself called up Adhir’s supporters on Monday to solve the problem.
While some seem to be happy about receiving Mitra’s phone call saying that whatever had happened was without the knowledge of the party state president some others were not satisfied and alleged that they had been manhandled at the Pradesh Congress office.
Looking at the Lok Sabha elections All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Rahul Gandhi had asked Mitra to come to Delhi on September 29 for a meeting. This would be the first meeting of Mitra with the AICC president after assuming office of the state Congress president.
Sources said that Gandhi will discuss strategies with him to strengthen party organisation in Bengal and also what the roadmap for the party would be ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
One of the allegations against Chowdhury as the WBPCC president was that he could not unite the entire Bengal unite and the party was divided into groups. The message from Rahul would be to put an end to it as the sole aim at the moment was to defeat the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre.
