DMK-led opposition parties in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday decided to intensify their stir against the bus fare hike at a meeting in all districts on February 13.

An all-party meeting chaired by DMK working president MK Stalin on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution to stage protest meetings in all district headquarters on February 13 to press the demand for a complete rollback of the increased bus fare.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President Su Thirunavukkarasar, MDMK general secretary Vaiko, state secretaries of CPI (M) and CPI, G Ramakrishnan and R Mutharasan and VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan took part in the meet. The opposition parties had already conducted a road roko stir condemning the steep increase in fares for government-run buses. Now, the opposition parties have announced the protest meetings.

Another resolution passed at the meeting urged the state government to release immediately all, including students, imprisoned after taking part in the agitation against the fare hike and dropping of cases registered against them.

When asked if the parties that met will form an alliance during polls, Stalin said, "You will get the reply when elections happen" in the state but did not elaborate.

Stalin said the meeting stressed the state government give up disruptive actions despite the High Court trying to resolve the issue of recent bus workers' strike. They condemned the cut in salary for workers during the strike days.

After a hiatus of six years, the Tamil Nadu government had on January 19 hiked ticket fares of buses operated by state-run transport corporations and private entities by about 20 to 54.54 percent, drawing flak from civil society and political parties alike. Opposition parties, besides students and the general public, had earlier staged protests against the revision. Following protests over the "steep" hike, the government had on January 28 revised the bus fares marginally.
