TN ministers meet Modi to seek exemption from NEET

The entrance exam benefits 4,678 students in the CBSE stream while 4.2 lakh students studied under the state board will not get their due share of medical seats

AIADMK's Tamil Nadu ministers and MPs on Thursday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi to exert pressure on the Centre to exempt Tamil Nadu from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admission amid the pressure mounting in the state.

The five-member ministerial team from Tamil Nadu, led by Lok Sabha deputy speaker M Thambidurai, sought Modi's intervention in getting Presidential assent for the two bills passed by the state Assembly exempting students from the state taking the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for admission to medical and dental colleges.

"Through NEET, a grave injustice is being done to rural students of Tamil Nadu. The entrance exam benefits 4,678 students in the CBSE stream while 4.2 lakh students studied under the state board will not get their due share of medical seats. The PM has assured us to consider our demands after consulting the Law Ministry since a case in pending. We are hopeful of a getting positive outcome," Thambidurai said.
