TMC supporters locked horns with cops in Hooghly district over a party worker’s death while in police custody, hence deepening the misunderstanding between the police and Trinamool Congress.
According to reports Kaji Nasiruddin, a ‘TMC worker’, was picked up by the police in Dhonekhali, Hooghly, allegedly following a dispute with a cop over his car last evening. Nasiruddin was put behind bars and at around 11pm his friend got a call from the police station, asking him to take Nasiruddin as “he was ill.’’
“When we took Nasiruddin to the local hospital, doctors declared him dead,’’ said his friend. News of his mysterious death in police custody spread resentment in Dhonekhali where violent attacks on the police station and cops lead to incidents of stone-pelting, destroying police vehicles, lathi-charge and tear-gas since this morning. The fight went on for hours and continued into the evening. According to reports, the police resorted to raiding homes and beating up innocents. When senior Congress leader Abdul Manan visited the spot, he said, “Actually, Nasiruddin was supposed to join Congress and he was killed with the help of police,’’ giving the case a twist. TMC’s big leaders, including Mamata Banerjee, remained silent. These incidents “are expected only to deepen the misunderstandings between police administration and TMC,’’ explained a party insider.
