In what is being touted as TMC's ploy to woo the Hindi-speaking population of West Bengal, the party said it would put up 10 Sun temples at Asansol in West Burdwan district ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Party MLA and mayor of Asansol Municipal Corporation (AMC) Jitendra Kumar Tiwari said that designs of the temples would be ready by December. "An estimated Rs 2 crore would be spent in putting up the 10 temples. The money would be collected by temple committees from people who want the temples. AMC will build adjoining and leading roads to the temples and put up light posts on the roads," Tiwari said.

In the adjacent Durgapur, two more temples are planned to come up. Tiwari, however, said that building those temples had no connection with the Lok Sabha elections in 2019. "There is no politics in it. The temples have been planned to be put up for facilitation of people here to offer puja conveniently in the next Chhat puja," he said.

Sitting BJP MP of the area, singer-turned-politician Babul Supriyo said that it showed how scared the TMC was of BJP. "The announcement shows that the TMC is frustrated and afraid of the BJP and its growing popularity among people. These stunts will not be able to stop BJP's ascent," Supriyo said who was pitched against TMC's Dola Sen and CPI(M)'s heavyweight Bansa Gopal Chowdhury in 2014 Lok Sabha elections in which Supriyo emerged victorious, leaving Sen and Chowdhury in the second and third positions, respectively.

Other BJP senior leaders said that it was TMC's hypocrisy. "If they are so keen on building temples then why do they oppose the Ram mandir agenda of BJP?" said state BJP general secretary Sayantan Basu.

CPI(M) leaders, however, said that it was an example of competitive communalism which the two parties have embarked upon because they are not connected with the people anymore.
