Within 12 hours of the TMC MLA from Krishnaganj, Satyajit Biswas, being shot dead gun-toting assailants, Nadia district police arrested two persons in connection with the murder on Sunday.

The Police has lodged an FIR over the murder and has named BJP leader Mukul Roy among others.

“We have lodged an FIR and arrested two accused - Sujit Mondal and Kartik Mondal,” said Rupesh Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Nadia district.

Sources in the police revealed that BJP leader Mukul Roy’s name has been mentioned in the FIR besides four others.

"So far, we have arrested two persons in this case and detained another three. A country-made revolver used to shoot the MLA has also been recovered. As per our primary findings, it seems that the victim was fired from behind and the act was the result of a well-planned plot," the officer said.

Asked about the chances of the assailants fleeing the area, the police officer said the state police have been put on a high alert.

Meanwhile, the Officer-in-charge of Hashkhali Police Station Anindya Bose has been suspended. MLA’s security guard who was on leave on Saturday has also been suspended.

Biswas was shot dead by miscreants on Saturday in Bengal’s Nadia district. He was attending a Saraswati Puja celebration at Majdia-Fulbari area around 8 pm when some miscreants opened fire at him.

The incident took place after Biswas got down the stage after inaugurating the Saraswati puja and was walking towards his car. Suddenly, several miscreants appeared out of nowhere and fired at him.

He was immediately rushed to the Krishnagar district hospital, where he was declared dead. His body has been sent for post mortem examination.

Trinamool Congress general secretary and state education minister Partha Chatterjee said, “We are not going to spare those who killed him. Those responsible for his death will be brought to book. BJP is responsible for this death. There are some ‘gaddars’ who have killed him.”

The TMC Nadia district president Gaurishankar Dutta has directly blamed BJP leader Mukul Roy for the murder. “Mukul Roy had been trying very hard to break TMC’s organization in the district. This is a political murder and we are sure that this is the handiwork of the BJP,” said Dutta.

Rejecting to the allegations, Roy said, "In the entire state of West Bengal, when anybody is killed by their own people or by or the miscreants, TMC and government try to implicate it that it is by leaders and workers of BJP. I  demand a probe by an independent agency."

"Mamata (West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee) is scared of us. It is on orders of Mamata that allegations are being levelled against BJP for this murder," he said.

On the other hand, BJP state president Dilip Ghosh termed the murder as a result of TMC's factional feud and ruled out the allegations of BJP’s involvement.

“This is a politics of murder that has engulfed the state. In the last couple of months, each time a TMC leader or a supporter is killed, they blame our party. I want the truth to be revealed through the investigation and the guilty be punished,” said Ghosh.
