Former deputy mayor of Kolkata and Trinamool Congress leader Farzana Alam died under mysterious circumstances in Kolkata on Monday night.

"Alam was admitted to the hospital at around 9.15pm with a massive cardiac arrest. We made all the efforts to revive her but in vain. She finally gave in and died at 10.15pm," said Pradip Tandon, spokesperson, Belle Vue hospital.

Why the hospital authorities cite cardiac arrest as a reason for her death, mystery surrounds her demise.

Family members alleged that she was undergoing acute depression after she lost the civic body polls from ward 65. After her loss, she was allegedly heckled by another faction of her party and since then she did not recover from illness.

On April 30, Alam, had alleged that activists of a rival faction of the Trinamool Congress assaulted her inside a party office at Palm Avenue while she was protesting against the bandh called by Left Front and BJP.

Alam was sitting in the party office after leading a rally against today's strike when she was allegedly attacked.

She was taken to Calcutta National Medical College Hospital, where she underwent some tests, including a CT scan of the brain. Later, Alam was admitted to Belle Vue Clinic and was released from hospital a few days back.

State panchayat minister Subrata Mukherjee and the newly elected mayor of Kolkata Sovan Chatterjee rushed to the hospital after news of her death broke.
