Trinamool Congress Party (TMC) today opposed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call to scrap the Planning Commission during his Independence Day speech at Red fort in the national capital. Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha MP, Sudip Bandyopadhyay today questioned the sudden need of doing away with the historic Planning Commission which was institutionalised by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose without discussing in the just-concluded session of parliament.
He said that the step to dissolve the Planning Commission cannot be a right step and placed his party's stand of raising this issue in the winter session of parliament. He claimed that the people of this country will agree with the stand taken by his party on this issue. He said that in order the Planning Commission acts as the link between the Centre and states and that it plays a major role in building the nation's infrastructure and help develop the rural areas of the country.
In his maiden speech from Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced disbanding of the Planning Commission. He announced that the 64-year-old Soviet style body will be replaced with a new institution keeping in view the changed economic situation internally and globally.
