Trinamool Congress on Wednesday held its core committee meeting to discuss the situation following the FIR filed by CBI. The investigating agency has named 12 of the party’s most influential members in connection with the Narda sting operation.

The meeting decided that each leader should adopt the same line of argument before the CBI, which is likely to summon them early next week.

But there are divergent opinions regarding the best legal option available before them in view of the serious clauses such as criminal conspiracy and illegal gratification mentioned in the FIR.

Legal experts consulted by the party have warned them against challenging the FIR as this is fraught with serious consequences. They have been also advised not to seek anticipatory bail which will further complicate the matter for them.

The party is keeping a plan B ready in the event of the leaders’ arrest. Considering the fact that the leaders concerned are the most influential, their arrest will create a vacuum which will be difficult to be filled immediately.

Party chief Mamata Banerjee has already said that she would handle it politically as the CBI case is a political conspiracy to malign her government.

Banerjee, now in Bhubaneswar, is expected to return to Kolkata on Thursday.
