A week after Mumbai's Tata Institute of Social sciences (TISS) were given termination notices as the University Grants Commission (UGC) failed to extend the tenure, the director of the institute has now written to the student union stating that the institute would review the work of all these teachers before taking a final call.

On March 24, faculty members from four prominent centres of the institute — Advance Centre for Women's Studies, Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policies, Centre of Excellence for Human Rights Education and the School of Law, Rights and Constitutional Governance were given termination letters signed by the institute Registrar CP Mohankumar stating that their term would end on March 31, 2017 as the UGC had not notified the institute about extending the tenure of all the centres that these teachers were a part of. The teachers were officially relieved from their services on Friday with their Internet and phone lines disconnected.

While the UGC on March 29 issued a public notice announcing the continuation of all its planned schemes, which includes these four centres, there was no clarity on what would happen to the termination of these teachers as the centres would stay for at least another year.

On Monday, S Parasuraman, Director, TISS wrote to the student union stating that the institute would conduct a review process before taking a call on retaining the teachers.

"We have written to the UGC seeking written commitment that it will release Rs 526 lakh spent by the TISS to manage these three centres, and by when it will release the grant for 2017-18. In the meantime, the institute will start a review of the performance of each of the faculty and staff engaged with these centres and decide on their continuance.

"While we make these decisions, the interests of the students will be kept in mind" read an email sent by the director. The email further reads "For the information of the students, we want to state that TISS may have been the only university in the country to appoint all sanctioned positions to these centres irrespective of the fact that the UGC has not been releasing money."

However, an institute source said that no such official notification has been sent to any of the terminated faculty members.
