Following the comments of Union minister Anant Kumar Hegde about Tipu Sultan, descendants of the 18th century ruler in Kolkata are likely to take legal action against him.

“I will send a legal notice against Hegde for his unfounded comments against Tipu Sultan. I was aghast to hear it last night. He was such a revered ruler who led life like a saint. I don't know on what basis he had levelled such allegations,” talking to DNA on Sunday said Bakhtiar Ali, one of the sixth generation descendants of Prince Mooniruddin, one of the 12 sons of Tipu Sultan, who had been deported to Kolkata by the British. He said that Tipu was a national hero and it was not for nothing that he was called the ‘Tiger of Mysore’.

Another of the king’s descendants, Shahid Alam, who is also the secretary of Mysore Family Fund Committee and co-trustee of the waqf estate of Prince Golam Mohammad, named after another of Tipu’s sons, said that Hegde should tender an unconditional apology. “Tipu Sultan is known for his nationalistic views and contribution to the country. We are surprised and hurt at the comments of the Union minister. I think he has made the comments toeing the party line in order to appease non-Muslims in Karnataka for his vote bank but he should realise that even educated Hindus don’t support his views. We will take legal action against him demanding an unconditional apology from Hegde,” Alam told DNA. He added that even when a serial on Tipu Sultan was being made there were several allegations by members of the saffron brigade but when historians proved how secular a ruler Tipu was, they were silenced. “These have resurfaced after the new government had been elected at the Centre,” Alam said.

Hegde had written to the Karnataka chief secretary to take his name off the list of invitees for the celebration of Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary on November 10. ‘Conveyed #KarnatakaGovt NOT to invite me to shameful event of glorifying a person known as brutal killer, wretched fanatic & mass rapist’, he tweeted.

Other BJP leaders too followed suit in the mass boycott of the event. BJP MPs Shobha Karandlaje and Nalin Kumar Kateel said they would not attend the event while BJP spokesperson and MLA CT Ravi too took to twitter to express his views against the Tipu Jayanti. ‘Communal CONgress led by Arrogant @siddaramaiah is repeatedly insulting Hindus by celebrating Tyrant Tippu Jayanti despite severe opposition’ and ‘Mass Murderer Tippu Sultan can be a hero only for Communal CONgress & @siddaramaiah who thrive on anti-Hindu Appeasement Politics’ he tweeted on Saturday.
