A 48–year old woman was killed in a tiger attack in the Jharan Range of forests under the Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra (FDCM), on Sunday morning, official sources said. The area is located some 45 km from the district headquarters on the Chandrapur–Gondpipri road.

According to forest officials, the victim, Vatsalabai Shedmake (48), a resident of Dewai village was reportedly attacked by a tiger after she went out to answer nature's call in the nearby forest area, at about 7.30 am on Sunday morning. After she failed to return, her kin searched for her deep in the forest and later, her dead body was found in compartment number 102 of the FDCM range. Range Forest Officer (RFO) D D Pulgamkar said that the beast had carried her body deep into the forest, upto a distance of around 1 km from the spot of the attack.

Pugmarks at the scene suggest that she was attacked by a tiger, he claimed. Her body was sent for an autopsy, after conducting a spot panchanama. An ex-gratia of Rs 25,000 was paid to her kin and the remaining compensation amount would be paid after completing official formalities, it was stated.
