'Ticketless' goat found in Mumbai local train auctioned for Rs 2,500

In a bizarre incident, a goat, which was found on a local train in Mumbai, was charged as a ticketless traveller, and auctioned for Rs 2,500.

The incident took place at Masjid station in Mumbai on August 1. Central Railway officials found a passenger travelling with the goat in a CST-bound local. When they asked for a ticket, the passenger initially searched his pockets before escaping, leaving the goat behind.  

The railway officials wondering what to do, decided to auction the animal. They tied the goat at Masjid station and fixed the price at Rs 3,000. However, nobody purchased it. The authorities then kept the goat overnight and got a caretaker. The goat, which was named Basanti, was taken care of, resulting in the authorities forming a bond with the animal.

On Thursday, the authorities finally got a buyer, who purchased the goat at Rs 2,500. Narendra Patil, the chief public relations officer of the Central Railway said that the authorities had thought a lot before deciding on auctioning the goat.

According to the rules, it is also not permitted to carry animals in local trains, as they can harm other passengers.
