Thumbs up for Akhilesh: Mulayam finally ratifies BSP-SP alliance, says it's 'unbeatable'

Two months after the BSP and Samajwadi Party decided to come together, the SP Patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav finally ratified son Akhilesh Yadav’s decision to have an alliance with the BSP, 23 years after the two parties had separated in 1995 following State Guest House case.

Breaking his silence on the BSP-SP alliance, Yadav welcomed the move and gave his blessings to the alliance for success in 2019 Lok Sabha polls. “The BSP-SP alliance would be unbeatable if both the parties work with honesty and amicably settle all issues including ticket distribution,” said Yadav at a public function in Mainpuri.

“It the two contest together, no political party or front will be able to stop their march to the Centre,” predicted Mulayam.

Interestingly, flags of both the political parties were displayed and waved by overenthusiastic Samajwadi Party workers forcing the party Patriarch to break his silence and speak on the alliance with the BSP.

Mulayam, however, kept a mum on questions related to the inclusion of Congress and other like-minded parties to broaden the BSP-SP alliance.  Mulayam has always maintained an equal distance with both Congress and BJP. He had openly opposed son Akhilesh Yadav's decision to enter into an alliance with the Congress in 2017 Assembly polls.

Earlier, Yadav had vehemently opposed the proposal of Akhilesh Yadav and Prof Ram Gopal Yadav in August 2017 to explore the possibility of an alliance with the BSP. “I will never approve any move to have an alliance with the BSP. I will take some drastic step if Akhilesh and Ramgopal even tried to make any such move,” he had warned his son and cousin.

But after chastening victories in Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha by-polls, Mulayam is learnt to have softened his stand and finally put a seal on his son’s decision to go ahead with the BSP.

Mulayam was instrumental in striking an alliance with the BSP about 25 years ago. The two political parties had successfully stopped the BJP’s saffron march in 1993 and had formed a coalition government with the BSP in 1993.

But the Dalit-backward-Muslim vote-bank alliance ended on June 2, 1995, when Mayawati withdrew support from the Mulayam government. In retaliation, agitated SP workers assaulted BSP legislators who were holding a meeting with Mayawati at the State Guest House on Meerabai Marg in Lucknow.

Many BSP legislators were abducted by SP leaders and Mayawati was holed up in the Suite No 1 of the Guest House. An attempt was made on her life also but BJP leaders, including late Brahmdutt Dwivedi, thwarted the SP attempts and saved her life.

The bitter experience and unpleasant events at the State Guest House on June 2, 1995, created a permanent schism between the two parties. But things changed after Akhilesh took over SP from his father Mulayam Singh Yadav. Even Mayawati absolved Akhilesh Yadav of State Guest House charges saying that he had not joined politics at that time.

Even after a setback in Rajya Sabha polls, the BSP Supremo Mayawati has announced to continue the alliance for 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Akhilesh too showed political maturity saying that he would take two steps backward on any issue including seat-sharing to keep the BSP-SP alliance intact.
