Three local ultras have shunned the path of violence and returned to the mainstream in the strife torn Kashmir valley.

“Three young boys in valley came back home in response to the call of their families. God bless them”, tweeted Dr Shesh Paul Vaid, director general of police, Jammu and Kashmir.

With this the number of local youth to have renounced militancy since last year has reached 10. Seven boys, including the footballer-turned-militant Majid Khan have returned after their parents made a fervent appeal to shun violence.

In fact the family of fidayeen Manzoor Ahmad Baba of Drubgam had made emotional appeal for his homecoming. However, he chose to ignore it and opted for the path of terror before he was killed along with two others, including 16 year old class X dropout Fardeen Ahmad Khanday when they stormed the CRPF 185th battalion camp at Lethpora on Sunday.

“I hope more boys will come back. Our effort is that the local militants should drop guns and we will help them to join the mainstream,” Dr Vaid said while speaking to the media as part of his year-end speech.

The homecoming of the local militants has come at a time when militants have unleashed a massive psychological warfare on social media to lure youth in the name of religion and Jihad. In fact Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) set a dangerous precedent of releasing the pre-attack video of the fidayeens after their death to eulogise Jihad and motivate youth to become suicide bombers.

One of the tree fidayeens Fardeen Ahmad Khanday’s 7.52 minute pre recorded video was released on the social media in which he called upon youth to join Jihad and become fidayeens in Kashmir.

Data reveal that Jammu and Kashmir police have brought back 74 boys from becoming militants in 2017 across the valley. Around 206 terrorists have been neutralized, of which 84 were locals and 121 foreign terrorists in 2017.
