Three Maha bravehearts among 18 soldiers martyred in Uri

Of the 18 martyrs two belonged to 10 Dogra and hailed from the Jammu division of the state while 16 others belonged to 6 Bihar unit which was to replace 10 Dogra unit that was moving out from Valley to another posting in Pathankot.

Three bravehearts of Maharashtra are among the 18 soldiers who laid down their lives while fighting gallantly against the highly motivated and heavily armed Jaish-e-Mohammad fidayeens in the 12 infantry brigade headquarters at Uri on Sunday.

Sepoy TS Somnath of Khadangali village in district Nashik, Sepoy Uike Janrao, of Nandgaon village in district Amravati and Lance Naik G Shankar of village Jashi, district Satara, all from the 6 Bihar regiment, made supreme sacrifices while defending their motherland.

Of the 18 martyrs two belonged to 10 Dogra and hailed from the Jammu division of the state while 16 others belonged to 6 Bihar unit which was to replace 10 Dogra unit that was moving out from Valley to another posting in Pathankot.

"Eighteen bravehearts of Indian Army were martyred during a terrorist initiated incident at Uri. Large number of casualties occurred due to the fire that engulfed the tent age/ temporary accommodation. Lieutenant General DS Hooda, army commander and all ranks of Northern Command expresses deep condolences to the families of the martyrs," said Colonel SD Goswami, defence spokesman at Northern Command.

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti paid homage to the martyrs at the 15 corps headquarters at Badami Bagh cantonment here on Monday.

Mehbooba laid wreaths on the coffins of the soldiers and later visited the 92 Base Hospital of the Army to enquire about the welfare of the soldiers injured in the deadly attack.

It is for the fourth time that soldiers of Maharashtra died in the line of duty in Kashmir since October last year.

On May 22 Naik Gawade Pandurang Mahadev of Maharashtra made the country proud by fighting gallantly against the highly motivated Pakistani militants before laying down his life for the motherland in the border district of Kupwara in North Kashmir.

Naik Gawade was the third soldier from Maharashtra who died fighting militants in Kashmir since November last. On November 17, 2015 Colonel Santosh Mahadik, a highly decorated para-commando of Satara Maharashtra, who was commanding officer of the 41 RR, died fighting militants at Manigah forest area of Kupwara.

Naik Shinde Shankar Chandrabhan of Bayale Village in Nashik district of Maharashtra was killed while fighting highly trained militants in Zoonreshi village of Chowkibal on February 13.
