In little over one year, the Narendra Modi government has given employment to 3 lakh master craftsmen from minoroty communities, mostly Muslim, through the five editions of ‘Hunar Haat’.

An initiative by the Union Minority Ministry that gives opportunity to artisans from minority communities to showcase their traditional arts and craft in different parts of the country, the haat clocked sales and orders worth over Rs 100 crore.

While the latest one is already underway at Connaught Place in Delhi, three previous editions of the exhibition-cum-sale had been organised in Delhi, while two in Mumbai and Puducherry.

Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told DNA that ‘Hunar Haat’ had become a “credible brand to fulfill PM Modi’s commitment towards ‘Make In India’, ‘Stand Up India’, ‘Start Up India’ and development with dignity and without appeasement.

“Through Hunar Haat we have reconciled art with the economics of it. It is organised by the minority affairs ministry to provide a market, domestic as well as international, to master artisans from the minority community. These artisans have been practising their traditional crafts, we have only made it more profitable and marketable,” Naqvi said.

He added that ‘Hunar Haat’ had been a “runaway hit”, as lakhs of people visited the talent show which encouraged master artisans and culinary experts and chefs who attended the event. The visitors purchase handmade products made by these artisans on a large scale. These craftsmen also receive large scale orders from domestic, as well as international markets.

The Minister pointed out that at the 6th “Hunar Haat” at Baba Khadak Singh Marg, hundreds of artisans from 22 States and UTs, representing minority communities, were participating.
