The three Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) sympathisers who were arrested by The National Investigation Agency (NIA) were granted custody by a special judge at the Patiala House District Court till February 9. The three men Sheikh Azhar Al Islam Abdul Sattar Sheikh, Mohammed Farhan Mohammed Rafiq Shaikh and Adnan Hussain Mohd. Hussain were deported from Abu Dhabi and arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi on January 29 whereupon NIA officials nabbed them.

The three are suspected to being involved in a conspiracy to recruit, radicalise and motivate people in India and abroad to undertake and plan terrorist attacks. Information leading to the arrest of these three suspects came about from the interrogation and investigation of 14 ISIS sympathizers who were arrested by the NIA. "During the interrogation of those 14 suspects, one of them revealed knowledge about a separate module operating from Abu Dhabi," a source stated. "It was this information that led us to this group," he added.

These suspects have been charged with Section 120b of the Indian Penal Code along with Section 18, 18-A and 18-B under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 as amended.

Hussain hailed from Bhatkal, Karnataka and Shaikh hailed from Thane, Maharashtra. However, the origins of Al Islam are so far unknown. The three suspects were brought to the trial court premises in central Delhi amid heavy security. Security officials secured the entire court premises and the threat level was elevated during that time. The in camera court proceedings lasted for 20 minutes during which armed personnel stood guard outside the court entrance.

The arrest of these suspects is alarming as it shows the deep trenches made by this banned terror outfit within the Indian diaspora and the number of takers it has.
