Ranchore Ram, a 21-year-old son of daily wage workers, has done in real life what Aamir Khan did in reel life in the movie ‘3 Idiots’.

Ranchore, whose parents are daily wage labourers in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), has secured AIR 2078 in OBC category in JEE-Advanced results declared recently. A native of Jhag village of Jaswantpura Panchayat in Jalore, Ranchore, after studying for three years  at one of the premier coaching institutes of Kota, became the first from the village to enter the prestigious  IIT.

For father Kesaram and mother Geudevi, who own four-bigha agricultural land in Jhag village it was a dream come true. Ranchore, who completed his middle class schooling from Jhag and had to travel 7-8 kilometres daily to reach to secondary school in Ramseen village. When Ranchore scored 78% in 10thclass, his maternal uncle Sutaram encouraged him to pursue engineering and take coaching in Kota. However, the fee of the coaching institute and living expenses were the main hurdles. “My parents cut down their expenses and did extra work to send me to Kota in 2014 where I shared a room my cousin,”  Ranchore said.

Apart from this, my uncle took care of all my expenses, including coaching fee. Ranchore obtained 80.80% marks in 12th class and got selected in JEE – Mains last year. However, he was not satisfied and decided to repeat and this time his hard work paid off as he secured AIR 2078 in OBC category. Ranchore said regular study of 5-6 hour daily  after attending  the coaching classes and keeping away from smartphone was key to his success. “Both I and my cousin would share a single mobile phone to talk to family members and teachers,” he said.

Allen Career Institute, where Ranchore studied for three years at a celebration organised to mark his success on Sunday, announced a monthly scholarship of Rs 1500 for next four years for his B. Tech studies. The scholarship  is meant to encourage the talented students like Ranchore Ram, said Naveen Maheshawari, director of the institute.

However, this success has come with a tinge of sadness as his cousin with whom he shared the room has failed to make it to IIT.
