While the bonhomie was missing during Canadian PM Justin Trudeau’s recent visit to India, the red carpet seems to have been laid out for French President Emmanuel Macron who was greeted at the airport on his arrival in India  personally by PM Modi.

Some commentators have even wondered if France could replace Russia as India’s number one partner abroad.  While we don’t know how the relations of two of the world’s oldest civilisation will pan out, there’s already one moment that is, to borrow a phrase from this millennial generation, breaking the internet.

It’s a picture of PM Modi hugging Macron at the airport and for some reason the French President has almost a Cheshire grin on his face.

Now the reason for Macron’s grin is cause for much speculation whether it’s because treatment accorded to him, allows him to claim the mantle of “Coolest Liberal Leader’ from Trudeau whose India visit was roundly maligned or because he’s mentally calculating the money made from the Rafale deal.

Whatever the reason, Macron’s smile has taken the internet by storm.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who arrived on a four-day visit to India on March 9, is scheduled to visit Varanasi today. Prime Minister Modi will receive the French President, who will arrive by a special plane at the Lal Bahadur Shastri International airport on Monday morning. The two leaders will take a special cruise on the Ganga, which also includes a meeting over lunch.

They are expected to hold a one-on-one discussion on several issues to boost the ties between the two countries. After lunch, President Macron and PM Modi will head to Mirzapur, where they will inaugurate Uttar Pradesh’s largest solar power. The French president will conclude his India tour by visiting Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hastkala Sankul in Bada Lalpur. Meanwhile, on Saturday, India and France inked 14 key agreements in the strategic areas of security, nuclear energy, and protection of classified information, as companies from the two countries signed contracts worth $16 billion.
