Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh has done it again. Known for making controversial statements, Singh’s ‘biscuit’ remark for the families of 39 Indians killed in Iraq sparked an outrage on Monday.

Singh, who flew down to Amritsar in a special plane with the mortal remains of the 38 Indians killed in Iraq’s Mosul, was addressing media. It was during questions on the relief measures announced for the families, Singh said, ‘this is not a game of football, Both state and central government are sensitive governments, External Affairs Minister had asked the families for the details of their members who can be given jobs etc, we will review.’

Not only that, he also said that the compensation announcement was not like ‘distributing biscuits.’

‘Ye biscuit baantne wala kaam nahi hai, ye admiyon ki zindagi ka sawal hai,a gayi baat samajh mein?Main abhi elaan kahan se karoon?Jeb mein koi pitaara thodi rakha hua hai (This is not like distributing biscuits, this is about people’s life. How can I make the announcement now?),’ Singh was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

The comments came even as the Punjab government announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh, job for the affected families living in Punjab.

‘Ex-gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh per family, job for one person per family will be given and current pension of Rs 20,000 to continue,’ said Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on compensation for 27 of 39 Indians killed in Iraq who were from Punjab.

This is not the first time that VK Singh made a controversial statement.

Earlier, he defended anti-Padmaavat protests and said, ‘Whenever we say something about history we must cross check it. Freedom of expression doesn't give us any right to tamper the history. We should pacify and resolve the situation by talking to the people, who are protesting against the film. They should be asked about their concerns and objections in the film. Whenever there are clashes of interest, things will certainly be messed up.’

In 2015, his dog remark caused major uproar. ‘If someone throws stones at a dog, the government is not responsible,’ Singh had said about Dalit children deaths.
