Thanks to three youngsters, many hungry, homeless people are being fed in Chennai. 'Giveaway' is a new venture (soon to be mobile app) that is not only feeding the hungry but also preventing mass food wastage.

“I was 13 when I was in my native place in a restaurant where I found a boy of my age washing plates for some money in order to buy some food for his ailing mother. My friends and I were very disturbed about the fact that restaurants throw away a lot of edible food in the garbage bin,” explains Mohamed Asif, who is busy preparing for his UPSC exams. Asif and his friends, Nareshwar Sivanesan and Fahd Khaleel, are all former software professionals who have now gotten together and formed Giveaway in a bid to end hunger.

“During Ramzan, we found a lot of people who couldn't manage one meal a day, let alone fasting. We wanted to do something about this. Thus, 'Giveaway' was born,” adds Asif.

While a new mobile app is in the process of being developed, the three have formed a group on WhatsApp asking people in Chennai to call them when they have excess or extra food. Their volunteers pick up the food and then distribute it among the needy.

As of now, the food is mostly donated by people from their own homes. For instance, if there is a function and they have excess food, people call Giveaway to collect it and give it to the hungry.

Over the last three weeks, they have managed to feed at least 1000 homeless people a day. The trio ultimately want to feed at least 10,000 hungry people every day in Chennai.

As for the app, Asif says it will launch in a fortnight. “We are just working on getting feedback from people and incorporating it,” says Asif. Currently, if you have extra food, you can get in touch with Giveaway by messaging them on WhatsApp on 99625 18992.
