The incident was reported on January 28, when the complainant, one of the owners of the shop, arrived at the store located in the Regal Building.
Just a day after the Republic Day, when the Capital was on a high alert with frequent police patrolling and deployment of additional personnel, a gang of thieves targeted a watch showroom in Connaught Place (CP), the heart of the city, and fled with over 600 watches worth more than Rs 1 crore.
The incident was reported on January 28, when the complainant, one of the owners of the shop, arrived at the store located in the Regal Building.
"According to the complainants, they found that the shop shutter wasn't closed properly. They then found a number of expensive high-end watches, such as Seiko, Casio, Guess, Fossil, Titan, Omega, Longines, and Rado missing. They said the thieves also stole about Rs 2 lakh in cash and some watches that had come in for repairs. Owners said total 680 watches were stolen," a senior police officer said.
Meanwhile, the police probe revealed that the showroom guard was not on duty on the night of the incident since he was not feeling well. In addition, the owners said the CCTV cameras at the shop were old and had not been replaced in a long time.
Police are, however, trying to scan CCTV footage from nearby shops and bank ATMs to identify the accused. Also, current and previous employees of the showroom, including the security guard, are being questioned, cops said.
"A case of theft has been registered and the matter is being investigated. A local gang of thieves seems to be behind the theft. The accused haven't been identified yet but the probe is on. A detailed list of the items stolen is yet to be shared," a senior police officer said.
