The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday accepted its defeat after the party failed to make an impact in Punjab and Goa. In the months leading to the elections, the party had put all its might and resources in both the states with Arvind Kejriwal himself addressing over 95 rallies in Punjab.

Party chief Arvind Kejriwal accepted the "people's verdict" in a tweet on Saturday afternoon as trends became clear that his party had failed to expand its national footprint with poor performances in Punjab and Goa. Kejriwal had led the Punjab campaign and had earlier declared that the party would bag "more than 100" of the 117 seats in the state assembly.

On Saturday, he avoided any interaction with the media and rather chose social media to express himself. "The struggle will go on," Kejriwal said in a tweet.

The party's head office at ITO was a dull sight as party supporters were not seen around. AAP leader Kumar Vishwas, after meeting Kejriwal said, "I want to congratulate Congress and BJP, their workers performed well. I accept AAP's defeat, we will analyse and learn from the results." The party which witnessed a sweeping win in 2013 in Delhi is now gearing up to focus on the upcoming municipal elections. The dates of the elections are yet to be announced.

"We will now be keeping all our focus on the MCD elections. The party will decide its strategy for the elections and we will make an effort to make a comeback. The MCD elections is our main target now. We are sure we will be once again be chosen by the public," said a senior party leader.

When asked about the people responsible for the defeat, Vishwas said it's a party defeat and everyone is responsible. "It's a party defeat. Right from Arvind Kejriwal to the local party volunteer is responsible. Right now we are unable to figure out the reason as everyone including the media did not predict these results," Kumar said.

"We are disappointed with the results. We will introspect on the reasons behind the (poor) performance," senior AAP leader Ashutosh said. AAP leader and Delhi minister Kapil Mishra said the party had not expected such poor results in Punjab and Goa.

Trends showed the party in Punjab trailing poorly after the Congress, which had almost touched a two-thirds majority. In Goa, another state the fledging party was expected to do well, the party found it difficult to even open its account.

The party had decided not to contest the vital state of Uttar Pradesh so that they could focus on Punjab. Party in charge for Punjab, Sanjay Singh also tweeted within minutes of Kejriwal saying that the party would analyse the reasons for the loss and congratulated "the new government."
