In the first move of its kind in south Asia, Maharashtra Cyber Digital Crime Unit (MCDCU) — a unit under the state's Cyber Security Unit — has suspended 29 pirate websites in two months acting on complaints from the media and entertainment industry. It's the first time that the industry and the government are working together to protect Intellectual property, officials said.

"These websites have been removed from the web and cannot be viewed anywhere globally," confirmed SP Balsingh Rajput, adding, "We estimate that this move will earn the industry close to Rs 8 crore per month by shifting the audience to official platforms."

He added that this would provide relief to the entertainment industry which yields an annual gross output of over Rs 2 lakh crore, pays annual direct and indirect taxes of Rs. 96,696 crore and provides employment to over 24 lakh people.

MCDCU was set up in August 2017, in order to address digital piracy related issues and is now acting towards its main objective to protect entertainment industry from of piracy. Recently Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed movie Padmaavat was leaked online within few hours of its release.

"We had issued a notice under Section 149 of the Code of Criminal Procedure to the domain registrar seeking action on these portals," said Inspector General of Police (Cyber-Crime) Brijesh Singh, adding, "Domain registrars adhered to our notice and took stringent action (suspended the services) against these portals. These websites contained pirated content of multiple Indian as well as foreign content owners."

He added that an estimated 88.56 million users accessed these websites per month, causing millions in losses to the industry. "These piracy websites are some of the most popular and top ranked websites in India," Singh said, adding, "They provided illegal versions of movies and TV shows within few hours of the official release. This theft of digital copyright was causing significant harm to the industry, in addition to revenue losses to the government and loss of employment."
