Three BJP candidates-- Vijendra Gupta, Om Prakash Sharma and Jagdish Pradhan-- survived the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) tsunami in the Delhi election, which saw several political bigwigs biting the dust.

While Gupta, a Delhi BJP heavyweight, won from his stronghold of Rohinee, Sharma and Pradhan gained from the anti-BJP vote split between Congress and AAP in Vishwas Nagar and Mustafabad constituencies.

In the run-up to these polls, prime minister Narendra Modi held rallies in Rohinee and Vishwas Nagar. He held five rallies in the capital.

Gupta won in the North West Delhi constituency by 59,866 votes, with a margin of over 5,000 votes over CL Gupta of AAP. A former Delhi BJP president, he had contested against Kapil Sibal in the 2009 Lok Sabha election and was pitched by the party against Arvind Kejriwal and Sheila Dikshit from New Delhi assembly seat in the 2013 elections. The BJP had lost Rohinee to AAP in the 2013 election, when Vijendra Gupta had contested from New Delhi.

"We will play the role of a sincere opposition. We want AAP to deliver all that it has promised to the people of Delhi," Gupta said on Tuesday, soon after his victory.

Sharma, who fought his first election in 2013, won by a margin of 10,158 votes defeating Atul Gupta of AAP.

Pradhan was 6,031 votes ahead of Congress MLA Hassan Ahmed, who for five terms had held the seat which has a 36% Muslim population. Both Congress and AAP had put up Muslim candidates.
