In what can be termed as a welcome step towards defreezing relations, India and Pakistan have agreed on some humanitarian gestures. Pakistan today agreed on an Indian proposal regarding the civilian prisoners incarcerated in both the countries.

The agreement included
a. Exchange of three categories of prisoners, women, mentally challenged or with special needs and those above 70 years of age.

b. Revival of the Judicial Committee mechanism.

c. Facilitating the visit of medical experts (from both sides) to meet and examine the mentally challenged prisoners for their repatriation.

Additionally, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Pakistani Foreign Minister also extended two more humanitarian proposals which are a) Exchange of prisoners above 60 years of age; b) Exchange of child prisoners, below 18 years of age.

The announcement comes at a time when India has witnessed steep rise in the ceasefire violation on the Line of Control.

On Wednesday also, Pakistan violated ceasefire in the Sundervani sector along the Line of Control. According to reports, the Pakistani troops at 10:30 am resorted to firing of small arms, automatics and mortars.  This comes nearly a week after Pakistan forces resorted to a ceasefire violation in Rajouri sector, thus extensively damaging property in the area. Earlier, a civilian was injured as Pakistan continued firing in Nowshera sector, and also resorted to indiscriminate firing of small arms, automatics and mortars in Bhimber Gali sector, along the LoC.

More than 19 people have been killed in the Pakistani shelling on Line of Control (LoC) and International border (IB) across Jammu division since January 17 this year. More than 50 people have suffered injuries and 50,000 people have fled their homes in Jammu division.
