Thane Zilla Parishad Results: Shiv Sena-NCP combine outshine BJP

Shiv Sena has halted ‘big brother’ BJP’s victory march in the fiercely contested election to the 53 seats of Thane Zilla Parishad. Shiv Sena, which had fought the poll in alliance with the opposition Nationalist Congress Party, has so far taken a lead.

Shiv Sena has  performed magnificently in the 53 seats of Thane Zilla Parishad. Shiv Sena, which had fought the poll in alliance with the opposition Nationalist Congress Party, has so far taken a lead.

Since its establishment in 1962, Shiv Sena has witnessed a historical win in Thane today. According to the results declared till 4 pm, Shiv Sena defeated the BJP, who had planned to get their hold over the Zilla Parishad. Shiv Sena won 27 of the 53 seats of Zilla Parishad.

BJP for the first time had fielded candidates in all 53 seats and had extensively campaigned. Party MP from Bhiwandi Kapil Patil and legislator from Murbad Kisan Kathore had played key roles in the selection of candidates.

On the other hand, Shiv Sena, which is in power at the Centre and in Maharashtra, allied with NCP in a bid to checkmate BJP. Shiv Sena minister Eknath Shinde led the party’s campaign and extensively travelled to campaign in all 53 seats.  

The party has claimed victory in Asangaon defeating the BJP. The Shiv Sena-NCP alliance defeated BJP in Ambernath Taluka Panchayat Samiti while in Shahapur Panchayat Samiti as well, Shiv Sena has come to power by winning 17 seats.

In the Shahapur-Dolkhamb Panchayat Samiti ward, all three seats have been won by NCP. In Sakadbav ward, Shiv Sena’s Balya Mama Mhatre has defeated BJP’s Ranjana Ughda.

Further, the Shiv Sena-NCP combine also trounced BJP in Kalyan Panchayat Samiti. Around 7.03 lakh voters from across Bhiwandi, Murbad, Shahpur, Kalyan, and Ambernath cast their votes on Wednesday. Bhiwandi has the highest number of voters at around 2.57 lakh, who voted for 21 seats.

With nearly 49,857 voters voting for four seats, Ambernath had the least number of voters.

A BJP leader from Thane, who did not want to be named, admitted that it was a setback for the party which had bagged eight of 10 municipal corporations and got maximum seats in the recently held second phase of the gram panchayat elections in the state. Of the 3,666 gram panchayats that went to the polls on Monday, the BJP has claimed victory in 1,311.
