A 38-year-old villager was sentenced to seven-year rigorous imprisonment on Monday by a local court for hitting his mother-in-law with a log which led to her death.

Thane Additional Sessions Judge VV Virkar pronounced Suresh Ladku Komb, a labourer from Kavtepada in Thane district's Wada taluka, guilty under section 304 part-II (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC.
According to prosecution, Suresh's first wife Vimal, with whom he had five children, had allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison. The accused later married another woman from the same village and thereafter started beating his children.

Vimal's mother Nimala Ladku Baraf (65) used to have frequent quarrels with the accused for raising his hand on the children. She used to hold him responsible for driving her daughter to commit suicide.

On August 2, 2011, when Nirmala was grazing the cattle in the village, Suresh allegedly attacked her with a log, following which she died on the spot, the prosecution told the court.

The accused was then charged under section 302 (murder) of the IPC. However, during the trial, the charge could not be proved. The judge, after hearing both the parties, observed that the prosecution proved the charge under IPC section 304 part-II and thus, pronounced the accused guilty under it while sentencing him to 7-year rigorous imprisonment.
