Thane familicide: Playing dead helped 22-year-old Subiya survive

Subiya Bharmar — the lone survivor of the cold-blooded killing where 14 members of one family were killed, including seven children — on Sunday said that when her brother, Hasnain Warekar, was on the killing spree, she played dead and it was only after he ended his life, she cried for help.

The 22-year-old, youngest of all the siblings, was rescued by neighbours and is admitted to Thane's Titan hospital in the ICCU ward. She also gave details about the horrific incident to police officials and said it would haunt her for the rest of her life.

One of the police officials, who spoke to Subiya, said: "During the killing, she knew she won't be spared. When Hasnain slit her throat, she did scream but he had her mouth covered. She did not move and acted as if she was dead. But when she got the opportunity she shouted for help."

Altamash Warekar, neighbour and a relative of the family who came to her rescue, said: "As soon as I heard the scream, I alerted the neighbours. We gathered and managed to break open the window and grill, and rushed Subiya to a hospital."

He added: "When we entered the house there was no area that was not covered with blood. We informed the police after we saw Hasnain hanging on the stairs."

Bodies handed over to kin, to be cremated on Monday

Bodies of victims were handed over to their family members for cremation. "We will be conducting the last rites at Kasarvadavali Muslim cremation ground. The relatives and villagers have termed this day as Black Day for the entire family and the village," said Salim Patel, a family friend.
