The three terrorists killed by the Border Security Force in Chamliyal area of Ramgarh sector in Jammu on Tuesday had probably crawled more than 100 metres inside a tunnel to hide detection and infiltrate. The BSF troopers discovered this when its jawans chanced upon a 2X2 feet wide tunnel in the middle of a field near the international border.

The BSF recovered three AK 47s with 20 loaded magazines, 517 rounds, one 8 mm pistol, two radio sets, GPS, mobiles, 20 hand grenades, seven IEDs and camouflage uniforms from the slain terrorists suggesting they posed grave security threat. To hoodwink BSF jawans, the terrorists had dug the tunnel’s opening about 75-80 metres from the IB near a tube well in an open field in Chamliyal, BSF claimed.

“When we found no breach along the fencing after killing the militants, we decided to check the nearby fields where farming is done and has soft soil. There we found the tunnel this morning. It’s suspected that the killed militants had used tunnel to crawl and infiltrate inside India,” said BSF director general, KK Sharma addressing the annual DG’s press conference.

Sharma said a parallel cannot be drawn yet between Nagrota attack on Army Corps HQ and Chamliyal and it was part of the investigation to find out if the two had any connection.

“We had stepped up vigilance post surgical strikes by the Army... We had deployed “depth nakas” (deep trenches) across the fence that helped us to detect and neutralise the three militants. We could not detect the militants immediately as it was Amavasya (moonless) night,” said Sharma.

This, however, leaves out the question why the BSF could not detect the sound or vibration when the tunnel was being dug up from Pakistani side. Even if terrorists did not use machine for tunnel boring, the equipment they used would have made some noise beneath the ground. Sharma said they are yet to find out how deep the tunnel runs beneath the ground.

According to BSF officials, the possibility of infiltration through tunnels is very high in the large geographical spread along the IB in Jammu and Punjab because of the soft soil, heavy undergrowth and open crop fields. The only way is to randomly dig deep nakas or deep trenches based on intelligence inputs close to the fencing and lie low to detect over ground movement of militants.
