Terrorists on Saturday night assassinated a senior Janata Dal (United) leader in the sensitive south Kashmir district of Pulwama even as the security forces were put on high alert after the intelligence inputs warn of possible terror strike in summer capital city of Srinagar.

Ajaz Ahmad, 27, Pulwama district president of JD(U), was killed when car-borne terrorists fired at him outside his residence at Arrubugh village on Saturday night. He suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed.

“He was in the lawn of his house when terrorists came in a Tavera and fired at him. Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Majid is suspected to be among those who shot him dead. We have launched a massive manhunt to nab the killers,” said Mohammad Aslam, senior superintendent of police, Pulwama.

Ahmad is the ninth person to fell victim to terrorists since Thursday in the Valley. Two cops were killed and another injured on June 15 at Srinagar and Pulwama.

On Friday, LeT terrorists killed and disfigured six cops, including Station House Officer of Achabal police station Feroz Ahmad Dar when they ambushed his vehicle at Tajwara village in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

The spurt in attacks comes at a time when the security forces have been put on high alert after intelligence inputs suggested possible terror strike in down town Srinagar.

...& ANALYSIS

  • The security situation in the Valley has become much worse than a proxy war unleashed by Pakistan.

  • It’s now more like direct action by Pakistan’s intelligence agencies, wherein the local Kashmiris are being used to target Indian forces.
