Terrorists, in disguise of journalists, barged into an armyman's house, who had come home for his son's last rites, and shot him dead at Shurat village in south Kashmir's Kulgam district on Monday.

Lance Naik Mukhtar Ahmad Malik, a soldier of 162 Territorial Army, was grieving his son's demise when gunmen entered into his room and fired at him from a point-blank range. He received grievous gunshot wounds and was taken to the sub district hospital in Kulgam where he was declared dead on arrival.

"We got the news that he (Malik) had come home and was killed in the morning. There was no law and order problem in the district," Dr Shameem Ahmad Wani, Deputy Commissioner of Kulgam, told DNA.

Malik, a former Ikhwan commander (counter-insurgent), had come home after his teenage son, Shariq Mukhtar, met with an accident on September 2. Mukhtar had slipped into coma. However, he succumbed to his injuries on September 14, police sources said.

"Malik was grieving his son's death when three terorrists barged into his home and fired a volley of bullets before escaping. In fact, they had feigned as reporters and wanted to meet Malik. They shot at him from a point-blank range," an officer said.

Massive manhunt has been launched to find the terrorists responsible for Malik's killing. A case under relevant Sections of law has been registered.

A pall of gloom descended on the Malik household after the incident. Emotions ran high when Malik's body reached the residence.

The cold-blooded murder of Malik evoked an angry reaction in the Valley. "Every human being killed in Kashmir by a Pakistani/Terrorist bullet is declared as Halal (lawful) by champions of human rights and our 'at the top of their lungs shouting' journalists. RIP (rest in peace) Brother. There will be no outcry as usual," tweeted Imtiyaz Hussain, Senior Superintendent of Police, Baramulla.

"Chinar Corps Commander and all ranks condole the death of Lance Naik Mukhtar Ahmad Malik who was killed in a dastardly act by theterrorists today at Kulgam. He was grieving the untimely demise of his son. Army stands in solidarity with the martyr's family," tweeted Chinar Corps of the Indian Army.

The incident bears stark resemblance to the case of a 34-year-old cop, Fayaz Ahmad Shah, who was killed on the occasion of Eid on August 22 in the same district. Shah, who was on leave, had gone to offer Eid prayer when he was shot dead. Earlier on June 14, the 24-year-old Rifleman Aurangzeb was abducted and killed when he was en route home in Poonch to celebrate Eid with his family.
