Terrorists abducted a 25-year-old policeman from Shopian district and killed him in neighbouring Kulgam in south Kashmir on Thursday night. Constable Javaid Ahmad Dar was kidnapped by car-borne militants near his home at Vehil-Chatwatan village at 9.30 pm on Thursday. His bullet-riddled body was recovered from Sehpora-Pariwan village. "Last night," said Sandeep Chaudhary, Shopian's superintendent of police, "we received information that Javaid Ahmad Dar was kidnapped near his home. We stated the search and his photo was circulated on social media. Unfortunately his dead body was recovered this morning We have launched an investigation."

According to sources, Constable Dar was the personal security officer of a top police officer in the district before he was transferred. Sources say he was beaten up before being shot multiple times. Police are awaiting autopsy reports.

Dar's killing comes 22 days after militants abducted and killed 24-year-old Aurangzeb of 44 Rashtriya Riffles in Pulwama district. Rifleman Aurangzeb was en route home in Poonch to celebrate Eid with his family when he was abducted by militants from Kalampora before being shot dead in neighbouring Gusso village on June 14. A day later, militants released a 1.15 minute video in which they could be heard questioning Aurangzeb about the encounters.

The killing of Constable Dar has evoked a sharp reaction from mainstream leaders cutting across political and ideological divide. "There can be no condemnation strong enough to denounce this murder. May Constable Javed Dar find place in Jannat & may his family & colleagues find the strength to bear this loss," tweeted Omar Abdullah, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister.

Senior PDP leader and former J&K Works minister Naeem Akhtar expressed solidarity with the family of slain policeman. "Strongly condemn this brutal murder. Solidarity with the family of this dashing young man," he tweeted.
