A group of heavily armed terrorists stormed the highly fortified Brigade headquarters of the Army at Sunjwan in Jammu in early hours on Saturday, killing two Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and injuring six others.

Jammu and Kashmir Parliamentary Affairs Minister Abdul Rehman Veeri today informed the state Assembly that Subedar Maganlal and Subedar Mohammed Ashraf were killed in the attack by a group of militants.

While the minister did not specify the group affiliation of the militants who launched the attack, officials said Jaish-e-Mohammed militants were behind the terror strike.

The attack also reverberated in Assembly as BJP members shouted slogans against Pakistan. On the other side, former Speaker and National Conference leader Mohammad Akbar Lone raised slogans in favour of Pakistan.

Speaker Kavinder Gupta said the presence of Rohingyas in Jammu led to the attack.

The incident occurred around 5 am when fidayeens, believed to be two or three, entered into the camp from the rear side and lobbed grenades and fired indiscriminately. Initially, four people including a JCO were injured when militants stormed the facility and took refuge inside one of the residential blocks to engage the troops.  One of them later succumbed to injuries.

Security forces immediately rushed in reinforcements to track down the holed-up militants. Heavy exchange of gunfire is currently on as troops have cornered the militants in the facility.

Meanwhile, to provide enforcement, Indian Air Force (IAF) para commandos have been airlifted from Udhampur and are headed towards Jammu. Another aircraft is airborne to airlift para commandos from Sarsawa in Haryana.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to the chief of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and took stock of the situation arising out of the terror attack.

During the telephonic conversation, the home minister sought details from Director General of Police S P Vaid on the terrorist attack on the Army camp in Jammu, according to a tweet by the Home Minister's Office.

"Around 4:55 am suspicious movement was noticed by the sentry and his bunker was fired upon. The fire was retaliated. The number of militants isn't known. They've been cornered in one of the family quarters," SD Singh Jamwal, IGP Jammu, said.

"Terror attack in heart of Jammu city is a worrisome development. Just few hundred metres from our home", tweeted Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary. District Development Commissioner, Rajouri.

The attack comes a day after fifth death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru. He was hanged on February 9 in 2013 following his conviction in the 2001 Parliament Attack case. Intelligence inputs had warned an attack on the army or security establishment by Jaish-e-Mohammed in view of Afzal Guru's death anniversary.

This is the second major fidayeen attack in Jammu and Kashmir in the last two months.

On December 31, heavily armed Jaish-e-Mohammad fidayeens stormed the highly secured training facility of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) killing five soldiers including an officer and injuring three others in south Kashmir's Pulwama district. Three fidayeens were neutralised after 36 hours of operation.
