Ahead of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh's visit, terrorists riding motorcycles attacked the police with automatic weapons leaving one police officer dead and another injured.

The attack occurred just hours after security forces killed a militant in north Kashmir's Sopore while Pakistan again violated the ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC) leaving one civilian injured in Poonch.

Police sources said the terrorists appeared near the Anantnag bus stand on Saturday evening and fired at the police. Two policemen were wounded in the incident. They were immediately shifted to a hospital where Constable Imtiyaz Ahmad Mir succumbed to his injuries.

"Constable Imtiyaz martyred, one injured in firing. Martyr left behind aged parents, sister, two brothers — one of them disabled," Jammu and Kashmir Police tweeted.

Security forces immediately called in reinforcements in the area which was immediately cordoned off to track down the terrorists.

Earlier in the day, security forces achieved success when they killed a Hizbul Mujahideen district commander in an encounter at North Kashmir's Sopore.

Police said acting on specific intelligence input about the presence of terrorists, Sopore police along with 22 Rashriya Riffles, 179th and 92th battalion of CRPF launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) in Dangerpora-Reben area.

According to police cources, the terrorist however fired on the joint search party. In the ensuing encounter one terrorist — identified as Shahid Ahmad Sheikh alias Shabir, a Hizbul district commander — was killed.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan army violated border ceasefire again and opened indiscriminate fire on Indian positions along the Line of Control in Poonch sector. A civilian was injured in the cross border firing.

"The Pakistan army resorted to unprovoked and indiscriminate firing of small arms, automatic and mortars in Poonch sector from 10:15 am. Indian army is retaliating strongly and effectively," said Lieutenant Colonel Manish Mehta, defence spokesman at Jammu.
