Tensions up at Jammu and Kashmir border as teenage girl, soldier killed

Tension has gripped the line of control (LoC) after Pakistani army resorted to heavy firing on the Indian forward positions killing a solider and 17 year old girl in the Uri sector of north Kashmir's Baramulla district.

What happened?
The incident occured at 5.15 pm when Pakistani troops violated the border ceasefire and fired indiscriminately on the Indian positions. A soldier and a 17 year girl died in the cross border firing.
"Around 5.15 there was ceasefire violation. The firing continued for two hour plus and that resulted in the killing of one solider", an army spokesman told dna.

What are the names of those killed?
The slain girl has been identified as Glushana Bano of Kamalkote area. The soldier's name has been withheld till the army formally breaks the news to the family.

What weapons were used?
The firing happened in Kamalkote area in the Uri sector and Pakistani troops used small and automatic weapons to target Indian positions along the LoC. "The firing has stopped as of now. We also responded to the firing from Pakistan", said the army spokesman.
The firing has signalled Pakistan army's designs to shift its focus on the LoC in the Kashmir valley. Pakistan earlier had targeted the International Border in Jammu by resorting to heavy firing and shelling in different sectors.

What happened in recent past?
Eight civilians were killed and over 75 injured in the cross border firing in different sectors of Jammu last month. The escalation prompted shifting of more than 35000 residents located in the vulnerable zones on the borderline as a precautionary measure.
Official figures reveal there were a total of 347 ceasefire violations in Jammu and Kashmir including 199 along the LoC last year. In 2012, 114 ceasefire violations were reported on the borders compared to 62 in 2011. During the last 10 years (2004-2013), 27 soldiers have been killed in various incidents along the LoC.
From January to July 16 this year, there have been 54 cease fire violations. There have been more than 33 ceasefire violations in 45 days in July-August on the IB.
Meanwhile, massive avalanche struck the army petrol trapping four soldiers and a civilian porter at the higher reaches of Shamshabari Range in Kupwara district of north Kashmir.

"An Army link patrol, operating in the areas South of Nasta Chun Pass were overrun by an avalanche, triggered from the higher reaches of Shamshabari Ranges at 8 am. One Junior Commissioned Officer, three Jawans and one civilian porter have got trapped", said Lieutenant Colonel NN Joshi, defence spokesman at Srinagar..

Lt Col Joshi noted that Army Avalanche Rescue Teams located at the Nasta Chun Pass commenced the search and rescue operation. "Search was in progress till receipt of the last information", he said.
